Lead-acid battery status indicator: an important breakthrough in sustainable energy
Lead-acid batteries have always been one of the key components in energy storage, but over time their performance and reliability have been a concern for the industry. However, the emergence of lead-acid battery status indicators provides an exciting solution to this problem.
The most accurate method of measuring the state of charge of a lead-acid battery is by measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte, rather than trying to work it out by measuring the voltage.
With conventional flooded lead-acid with vent plugs on each cell, you could not only open up a vent plug to visually see the level of the electrolyte but could use a battery hygrometer to measure the specific gravity of the electrolyte.
With sealed batteries, the magic eye indicator does that job. Clearly they are not as accurate as using a proper hygrometer, but they do give you a basic visual indication of battery state.
Are they reliable? In as much as when you need to use it, it gives you an approximate indication of battery state, yes. In terms of giving you an accurate measurement of state of charge, not very.
The advantage is, the method is very cheap and fitted into the battery itself, so you don’t have to worry about needing a hygrometer or faffing about with the electrolyte itself.
